Rancho Las Palmas: Autism and a Special Vacation

This mommy needed a vacation in a crazy way.  It has been a long summer.  My kids have autism, so I was trying to find a place that could help me accommodate some of our needs, while being close to home, fun and family friendly.

After perusing the web, some blogs, and looking at #ocmomtravel I called up Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage, CA.  I saw on the web there was a Dive into Summer Special Rate. I  talked to their reservation line and told them about my kids and the vacation I wanted to take, and some of the special needs that my kids had, and I was amazed at the help and suggestions and willingness to make our stay enjoyable, so I booked us 4 days at the resort.  The concierge Eric Santos was very helpful in getting us set up and making us have a comfortable and relaxing vacation.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon and it was a very hot 112 degrees!  But have no fear SPLASHTOPIA was waiting for my kids and us so we DOVE into the pool and the water slide and it was like a HAPPY FACTORY for my water babies.

Our room was amazing, the location and the view were perfect for what we needed.  The decor was gorgeous, and my kids really couldn’t disturb other guests, which is a huge worry when I’m out.  One of my kids favorite things was the Fun Zone Arcade that was set up and open every day.  It broke up some of the pool time, and was a great way to keep the kids busy and out of the heat.  It was fun and they had so many different games and activities for the children, I was surprised, I’ve never seen that before in a desert resort.

We ventured out in the Palm Springs Area and had a date shake at Date Shield Farm, which was AMAZING, and reminded me of the date shakes at the Shake Shack in Newport Beach before it became a Ruby’s and before Crystal Cove was even a development.

My husband and youngest son took a trip to the Palm Springs Ariel Tramway one day and did a couple of mile hike, and it was a blast, as well as a great way to beat the heat on the desert floor, it was about 25 degrees cooler up at the top of the mountain.

We found some things in the desert to do with autism, and the hotel made us feel more than at home.  If you are thinking of vacationing in the desert area with your family and or your special needs child, I absolutely 150% percent recommend Rancho Las Palmas.  The staff on duty in the pool area were made aware of my kids and some of their personality traits and how to help them or work with them.  They were so kind and understanding and helpful it was beyond my expectations.

We had to cut our trip short by a day because the hustle and bustle of resort life was a little more than one of my kids could handle, and we left in a big hurry, and again the staff came to help and went above and beyond the call of duty and made our stay and our quick retreat out of there a great experience.  I can hardly wait to get back and experience the spa, and some of the other amazing features.

Autism is Not

Again, it happened again.  I’m devastated, and sad, and really wish we as a society could turn ourselves and work in the direction to help the mentally ill.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of those that are suffering in the wake of the tragedy at Isla Vista.

Another mentally ill mad man did the unspeakable.  He went after innocence, he went after girls, he went after his roommates, he went after anyone that he thought wronged him.  He was certainly mentally ill after watching his multiple YouTube videos and reading his 141 page manifesto.  The break with reality was sad, and shocking that the system, his parents, and the police failed him, and then they failed the rest of us.

But all of that will be a can of worms that will be open and picked apart over the next several months.

Watching the reports this morning, I was saying to myself “Okay media, get it right, don’t do it again”.

After the Colorado movie theatre shootings, there were multiple reports that that shooter was a loner and possibly autistic.  After Newtown, CT ABC News, "Shooter was autistic - with personality disorder".  The same thing happened the day after the Aurora, CO shooting.  Joe Scarborough of MSNBC said "These shooters are young, white, men, possibly autistic, loners.   Again after Newtown Piers Morgon on CNN had a psychologist who stars on a BRAVO reality show listening to millionaire cocktail queen Bethenney Frankel whine about her poor pathetic life, blathering misinformation about Autism. Piers Morgan then goes on to say how autistics are missing something in the brain.

So I’m watching this morning, and praying that we’ve learned something from all this senseless tragedy  but no, this morning 3 reports went on to state that the mad man had POSSIBLY been diagnosed with “Aspergers” at a younger age.  NO ACTUAL FACTS, but on their race to be first to report they say Austim is the reason. So as other reports are stating Autism is a mental illness, personality disorder and behavior disorder.  Over and over to the point of nausea.  There are no reports or evidence that autism has EVER been the cause of violence.  In fact, there are more reports and research that those with autism are MORE likely to be the victims of crime, assault, and murder.  That is actual fact, and I apologize for the lack of responsibility that our media has taken in the race to be first to report even if what they are report is sensationalizing and not actual facts.

As the parent of 2 small children with autism, I am angry that the entire media has set back autism acceptance and awareness years.  These children have so much social stigma on them already, so much to fight through just to do what typical children do.  It was all shoved to the back of the bus by the large sweeping statements made by many bloviating windbags who did nothing but damage an entire community of people by their false misleading, misguided and uninformed reports.  My son does have public temper tantrums and outbursts, and can at times be aggressive.  I get the stares, I have had friends stop bringing their children here to play, what we really need to do is throw psycho killer on top of the stigma they have to carry on their tiny little shoulders.  Thanks a lot media.  I thought your job was to tell a story of what happened? Clearly not your practice anymore.  They literally set back the acceptance and understanding of autism years.

After the Newtown shootings  as I lost most hope for those in the media CNN's Dr Sanjay Gupta proved to be the voice of reason via social media.  On his twitter feed "Something needs to be clarified, there is no evidence of a link between autism and planned violent behavior".  Then Anderson Cooper took to the airwaves to debunk the myths being reported about autism.  So to Anderson thank you, to Megyn Kelly thank you, to Dr Gupta, we appreciate your truth, support and common sense in your reporting.

Megan Kelly was the first to report on America’s Newsroom Megyn Kelly "Autism is not a mental illness but a neurological disorder."  And believe it or not that is not very hard to research.  That exact definition is on the CDC website, the Autism Society, Autism Speaks.  So clearly our media and the so called journalists and anchor people no longer like to work they just want to report something first.

My heart hurts for my kids and then I was just overwhelmed with the thought of if a shooter came into my kids class.  My son cognitively would not know what was going on, he would not receptively understand instructions from the person trying to hurt him or help him.  The sensory overload of his nervous system would probably cause him to do something that would end up costing him his life.  THAT IS THE REALITY OF AUTISM that the media is missing.  These kids are more likely to be the victim, the helpless, silent victim of a crime than the perpetrator.

The pain that I feel for these children with autism that now have a new battle to overcome.  They now have to fight their way out of the reports of so called “journalists” that know not what they speak.  There are too many people that take the media seriously and will now be afraid of people with autism, will make more of a stigma on the kids than they already have.  I have a friend that always tells me "Your kids don't play with mine" "They don't share", "They don't want to be friends with my kid".   I have to constantly fight that kind of ignorance, and now I have to be an advocate for all the kids and families with autism that our kids aren't going to turn Psycho Killer.  The setback that our families get all the time is heart breaking, when the media goes after our children it’s devastating.

So as this tragedy is on the forefront of our minds, I hope we really learn that until we are ready to deal with MENTAL ILLNESS, we are never going to overcome this kind of event.

The truth is there is evil in the world, the truth is we can’t hide it or ignore it.  Mental Illness is tragic, but it can be treated, ignore it and it is like putting gasoline on a fire.  That is what happened here.  We can not blame autism, or make autism a mental illness, when it is defined by the CDC as a NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER.

It's here - I'm not ready but I'm willing

The race I was supposed to be training for for the last 8 weeks, is now arrived.  And it's not that I haven't trained, but I haven't trained properly.  You see, my life gets in my way of this athlete that I dream of being. I'm working out, eating good, and I actually have run okay, just have skipped all my LONG runs.  .  I'm sort of nursing, what I hope is not a bad injury.  I am hoping KT TAPE is going to be my savior.

The OC Half Marathon is my first half marathon, this will be the 3rd time I've run it, and I plan on running all 3 Beach Cities half marathon in the next 12 months, because I'm becoming a bling whore, and want the special medal.   The OC Half Marathon is the most gorgeous course you can imagine,  You spend the first 9 mile looking at the ocean/bay or ridiculously beautiful Newport Beach real estate.

So I will run it, walk it, or crawl my way across the finish line.  As life got in my way, and I lost my focus for awhile, I'm a runner, I'm a slow runner, but I like it.  I love what running has done for me.  Running brought me back to life, it kept me out of the dark place after cancer, and it was my big coping mechanism for autism.  I NEED to run.  I'm a better me when I run and train and am doing something solely for me.

So hopefully, I'll see you on the course, or you'll pass me.  But wait for me at the finish line because even though I'm slow, I'm still running, and I will finish.  I was so inspired watching the Boston Marathon this week, I feel invigorated, ready and looking forward to my next race, and training appropriately and making running and me a priority, and having fun doing it.  Because lets face it, I have to take care of myself, or I will not be around to care for those that really need me.

Happy Trails!

7 weeks and counting

I have signed up to run the OC Half Marathon.  It was my first half marathon, and this will be my 3rd time running it, and my 5th half marathon.  While I have struggled with running, and had a huge lack of consistency over the last year, I FINALLY feel like I'm in a groove and training well and will be ready to go on race day.

When I started running it was simply to get me out of the house for a 20 - 45 minutes alone with no one needing anything from me.  It was therapeutic, it was cathartic, it was necessary for my sanity.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, the $90 I spent on my first pair of running shoes was the absolute cheapest form of therapy I could have found.

Now I started running relatively late in my life - in my mid 40's, but I think that makes me a little bit more of a bad ass.  Because as you age and stuff, you have a lot of aches and pains anyway and with running and exercising, I've just added to all of that.  I started running because I was scared shitless my cancer would come back, and I need to get and stay healthy as fast and as cheaply as possible, the solution was running,

So I'm kicking up my weekly mileage right now to build up my endurance for race day.  I don't feel so confident as a runner that I run with people, because let's face it, I AM SLOW.  Painfully slow, and I'm not sure how to speed up, so I'm working on my treadmill and doing some High Intensity Intervals to help.  I don't have a coach, I follow runners on social media, and hope that what I read kicks in some knowledge that will help me.

But who am I kidding? I don't know most of the terms runners use,  tempo runs, hill repeaters, PR.  I just want to finish the damn race!!  So that's how I roll.  I will work on my endurance try to speed it up a bit, and finish at a faster time than I did the last time.  I'm an old lady runner, and I'm totally cool with it.  I am faster than a couch potatoe and a turtle, so I've got that going for me ;)

As I embark on this training, I have to remember, I'm healthy enough to run, I beat cancer, I fight autism x2 daily, and I am sober, a half marathon is really a piece of cake!

My apology to my son

Dear Franklin,

I am so sorry and have been full of doubt and guilt for – well doubt of my mothering abilities probably since your birth and guilt since the second some professional told me you had autism.  I let some people that work with you convince me that you were not worthy of the help you need, I let their words cloud my judgment where you were concerned, and I let precious time be wasted.

You see, there is no instruction manual for typical children, and there is absolutely no manual to maneuver your way through the labyrinth of life after you are labeled  “special needs”.   There are so called “professionals” that really have a passion for children like you and want to help, but are corn hold because of a horrible defective system.  There are so called professionals that are out for a money grab, and don’t really care if they help you or not, they just want to get their check.  There are professionals that pull at the heartstrings of families that so desperately want help, with no guarantees, and very large expenses.  I’ve pretty much lost faith in the professionals – it has been the mommies, and the daddies, that have lifted us up, and helped us and guided the families in how to survive the jungle of special education.  And for those families we will never be able to express our true gratitude, except to pay it forward to the newly diagnosed families.

Mommy took the professionals at their word that they had your best interests at heart.  I believed them when they said you were getting an appropriate amount of services for your level of cognition.  (WHICH WAS A LIE)
I believed them, when they said this might be as good as you get. (WHICH IS NOT TRUE)
I believed them when they said, you may want to consider just making him comfortable this might be all there is for him. (WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE)
I believed them, when they said you were not teachable because your behavior was too challenging.  (YOU ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, THE PROFESSIONALS ARE THE PROBLEM)
I believed them when they tried to make me doubt you and what is inside, and lost sight of what an amazing little boy you are.

So my pledge to you baby boy, is to NEVER EVER take a professionals word with a bit of sincerity.  I will always find a way to help you.  I will never take no for an answer. I will never let anyone lessen your worth because you are different, I will never let someone work with you that does not believe in you and your abilities.  I will not let anyone work with you that do not think they are capable of offering solution to your life.  I will make sure that I always listen to my mommy gut, and will not let a bunch of initials behind someone’s name determine that they know you better than me, after a 20 minute assessment. I will take this ProLoQuo 2 Go, and let it give you the voice you so desperately deserve.  I want nothing more in my life to hear your thoughts and wants, and likes and dislikes.  I can't wait for wait is about to come.  In 2 days since another mommy told me how to help you, you have amazed me (and I think yourself) with what you can do.

You are the most amazing thing I have done with my life, and I’m so sorry I let my loyalty to you, and what I thought was best for you weaken, because of the minutia that I was being fed by some stupid ignorant people with degrees.  I will never stop believing in you. I will go to the ends of the earth to search out help for you and I will always make sure that YOUR best interest is in my heart, not the convenience of a few.

I love you baby, and I will never stop standing strong for you.

Mommy

Knott's for the Cure - Ticket Giveway

As a breast cancer survivor, nothing warms my heart more than an organization doing what it can to help spread awareness and help for the cure.
Knott’s Berry Farm and Susan G. Komen Orange County are working together to raise money for breast cancer awareness, services and research by offering a special “Pink Ticket” and limited edition specially designed “pink” merchandise from February 1 through March 31st.

“It is wonderful to see Snoopy hugging Woodstock on top of the logo for Knott’s Berry Farm for the Cure benefiting Susan G. Komen Orange County,” said Lisa Wolter, Executive Director of the Komen Orange County Affiliate. “This partnership will raise much needed funds for mammograms and breast health outreach, and it shows the warmth and caring embrace we can all extend to women and families going through their struggle with breast cancer.”

In Orange County, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to Komen’s funding of research, new treatments and awareness of the importance of annual mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest and most curable stages, the survival rate for breast cancer has risen dramatically over the 33 years of the organization. The Orange County Komen Affiliate provides mammograms for uninsured women and works with other organizations to bring breast health information to people throughout the county.

The promotion will provide guests with the opportunity to enjoy Knott’s world class entertainment, attractions and specially-themed “pink” décor, while supporting an important cause that touches many women. Starting February 1, through March 31, guests can purchase “Pink Tickets” for theme park admission only online at www.knotts.com. A portion of the “Pink Tickets” proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen Orange County.

Knott’s Berry Farm has kicked off the promotion by donating $25,000 to Susan G. Komen Orange County. The money that the theme park has already donated will provide 400 women in Orange County with life-saving breast health services. Guests entering the theme park during the time of the promotion will be greeted by a pink Knott’s Berry Farm for the Cure display adorned with Snoopy and his pal Woodstock. Guests can purchase a commemorative limited edition magnet to place on the special display in honor of, or in memory of, someone affected by breast cancer. The magnet will be sold at select merchandise locations inside Knott’s Berry Farm and all proceeds will benefit Komen Orange County.

To be eligible to win 2 tickets to Knott's Berry Farm
